Censure of Governor Moves to House Floor

(Columbia, SC) – House Speaker Bobby Harrell issued the following statement about the Judiciary Committee’s actions today: 

“Again, I must thank the Judiciary Committee for taking the time during this busy holiday season to fully investigate the allegations of serious crimes and serious misconduct made against the Governor.  I applaud their efforts to address this regrettably necessary matter so that, when the General Assembly session arrives, lawmakers can focus on the issues South Carolinians care about the most.

One month and one day ago came the big -- and hugely welcome -- news that Boeing would bring 3,800 jobs our way by putting a manufacturing facility for its 787 Dreamliner in North Charleston. Six days ago, another uplifting economic story broke as the U.S. Energy Department announced a $45 million federal grant to help establish a $98 million "test bed" on the former Charleston Naval Base for the world's largest wind turbines.

Clemson unveils $98M test facility for wind turbine drive trains

Sanford Wrong to Withhold Public Documents
Governor’s Transparency Promise remains broken, in violation of court order

(Columbia, SC) – On November 5th, supporters of government transparency won a major victory when the S.C. Supreme Court ruled that Governor Mark Sanford had to fulfill the transparency promise he made and release the Ethics Commission’s investigative report to the public.  Yesterday, the Ethics Commission privately gave the Governor a copy of this public document.  But despite this court ruling, Governor Sanford continues - as of this point in time - to violate his transparency promise by withholding this report from the public.

This last week in October was a great week for South Carolina.  In just two days, lawmakers were able to secure a huge economic development announcement and took action to protect thousands of unemployed South Carolinians from losing their federal benefits.  This all came about during a special session of the General Assembly, where Legislators were focused on accomplishing two major goals.

How the Boeing deal was done

A week before North Charleston landed a new Boeing jet assembly line, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham thought South Carolina had lost the deal. Boeing CEO James McNerney called Graham’s Senate office, saying what a difficult decision he had to make in choosing between South Carolina and Washington state, where the aircraft maker assembles all its commercial planes.
