House reaffirms need for voters to positively prove identity
(Columbia, SC) - Today, the South Carolina House of Representatives gave approval to a common sense voting provision intended to prevent fraud and defend our voting system from abuse. Under this provision, voters will simply present a photo ID when they cast their ballot in our state’s elections. Currently, poll workers have almost no means of positively determining that a voter is actually who they claim to be casting a ballot.

Warrantless Searches for Parolees Veto Overridden by House
(Columbia, SC) – Today, the South Carolina House of Representatives voted 74 - 37 to override the Governor’s veto of the Warrantless Searches for Parolees Bill (S. 191). The measure, strongly supported by our state’s law enforcement officers but opposed by the ACLU and Governor Sanford, will help keep violent criminals intent on doing further harm off our streets.

South Carolina lawmakers moved closer Thursday to overriding Gov. Mark Sanford's veto of a bill allowing officers to search people on probation or parole without a warrant, and that's a positive step. House Speaker Bobby Harrell expressed it perfectly in response to Sanford's veto, saying: "Probation or parole is not a right. By committing their crimes, they have forfeited the level of privacy that law-abiding citizens are entitled to have."

Long session shortened; Members return after 3rd furlough week
(Columbia, SC) - Today, the South Carolina House of Representatives returned to the State House following a 2-week Easter Holiday furlough of House members. In taking this leave, the House has now taken a total of 3 furlough weeks, saving taxpayers more than $150,000. South Carolina has one of the longest Legislative sessions in the country, leaving lawmakers ample time to address issues this year.
