State awarded grant for charter schools

South Carolina has won a $5.7 million, two-year federal grant that aims to create more high-quality charter schools. State leaders will use the money for a number of initiatives, such as offering intensive training and assistance to help groups develop feasible, ambitious charter schools; promoting charter schools to serve at-risk students in high poverty areas, target closing achievement gaps and serve areas that lack charter schools; and creating a leadership academy to prepare charter school principals and provide training for established schools and board members.
